The Karmic Challenge – Week 16

THE CHALLENGE. A man (Captain Savage).  A woman (Rose). A quest. To earn enough karmic points by Christmas to be reincarnated as Something Nice.  Right now I’m thinking maybe dolphin?

Yes, that again. Due to understandable circumstances, I’ve missed Weeks 13, 14 and 15.  It’s been that kind of month.

BUT – I haven’t given up.  So…

Oscars Law

Violent Violet: What the frig is Oscar’s Law? And who the frig is Oscar?

Rose: On Sunday I went for a REALLY long walk with a group of lovely people who help needy dogs.  I will also be donating blankets to them AND going to a fundraising cocktail party.

Violent Violet: Well f*** me!  That’s REALLY getting down and dirty!

Rose: ANYWAY – the walk was in aid of Oscar’s Law (a law dog-lovers hope to see passed which bans cruel and stinky’ puppy farming’).

Violent Violet: Oh yeah? So who’s this effing Oscar?

Rose: Well, Violet, to quote from the Oscar’s Law people:

Oscar was one of a number of dogs rescued from a puppy factory in central Victoria. Dogs had been neglected to the point that they required urgent veterinary care. ….Days later and recovering from surgery, Oscar was returned by authorities to the very people who failed to provide veterinary care and who had neglected all their dogs, not only Oscar. They have never been charged with cruelty.

THIS is Oscar, just rescued.

On 9 July 2011, 18 months after being returned to the puppy factory, Oscar was saved once again. His recovery has been gradual given the psychological and physical trauma he endured for five years of his life.  Oscar is now safe….but there are still thousands of ‘Oscars’ hidden away on factory farms treated as breeding machines to supply the pet industry.

And this is Oscar now!

Violent Violet (sighs and picks nose ostentatiously: Ok so it’s a cause! Another one!

Rose: Yeah sure it is. BUT to help this cause, all you have to do is know where your dog is coming from. DON’T BUY A PUPPY FROM AN UNREGISTERED BREEDER OR FROM A PET SHOP (which gets its puppies from unregistered breeders).  One – if you do you might end up with one sick puppy or with all sorts of inbreeding glitches you didn’t sign up for. Two – the conditions these dogs are kept in REALLY STINK.  Constantly pregnant, inbred, neglected, underfed, kept in small dark cages and under-socialised – don’t contribute to it.

Violent Violet: Nice to know you’re so damn concerned about animals. Couldn’t give a flying fuck about people though, could you!

Rose: Yes, well, in other news this week, an old gentleman has kindly volunteered to spend an hour a week educating me about spectator sports and the Second World War.  It’s not easy for him – I hate sport and I don’t know a thing about it, and as for World War 2, I’m pretty hazy on it other than the fact that Hitler only had one testicle. BUT – so far he’s showed me lots of war photos (lean, half-dressed ANZACS with stubble, mmm…) and shared some war stories – from the participants’ point of view.  Here’s one.

“One day the corporal lined us all up and said ‘I want one in every three of you to step out of the line’.  So I stepped out – turned out I’d volunteered for a burial party.  There were these Japanese, they’d been killed a couple of days ago, and we had to bury them in these burial pits.  Well – they’d been dead for a while and they….you can’t imagine the stench.  And we had no gloves or anything. I was nearly sick.  And I just can’t forget it, I just can’t forget the smell…And one of the men, he’s going through all their pockets, so I say, whaddya going through their pockets for mate, they don’t have anything! But he pulls out all this Japanese money and stuffs it in his bag…must have been worth a fortune after the war.”

And then my new friend starts to cry.  I guess he’s reached a time of life when these things are starting to come back to him.  It almost makes me cry too.

‘War is a horrible thing. It’s not worth it.’

I have to say, I’m kind of glad he showed up at it though.  Lousy for him, but saved Australia’s bacon.

I reckon maybe 20 points? Captain Savage, how am I doing so far?
